Kolam, also known as Rangoli in northern India, is a cherished ritualistic art form practiced by Tamil women across Tamil Nadu. The term ‘kōlam’ signifies ‘form and beauty,’ symbolizing auspiciousness and divinity. Made with finely ground rice powder or paste (known as kola-podi in Tamil) on meticulously swept grounds, kōlam designs adorn homes, streets, and ceremonies, infusing color and harmony into everyday life.
Kolam not only provides protection and prosperity within homes but also extends a warm welcome to visitors and deities alike. It serves as a daily practice of focus, meditation, and spiritual yoga for women, initiating each day with auspiciousness.
This art form seamlessly integrates Mathematics and Spirituality, employing intricate patterns of lines and curves based on a grid of dots connected by straight or curved lines. Passed down orally through generations, the knowledge of Kōlam patterns is preserved amongst women, learned through daily observation of this sacred ritual.
In our workshop, our instructor will guide you through step-by-step practices to create traditional patterns such as the dot design. Using traditional white powder and vibrant colors reminiscent of festivals, you’ll explore the depth of this ancient art form.
